Gluteoplasty

Gluteoplasty, or buttock augmentation, is most commonly performed in Brazil, which is why it is often referred to as a Brazilian butt lift.

Gluteoplasty is performed on individuals with underdeveloped gluteal muscles, resulting in a less aesthetic flat or “square” appearance rather than a rounded one. It is also indicated for those whose buttock shape does not match the overall contour of their body, even if they do not have the aforementioned muscle issues.

How is Gluteoplasty Performed?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can be done in two ways: the first method involves augmenting the muscle deficit with implants, and the second method uses autologous fillers via fat transplantation (lipofilling).

Gluteal Implants

When using gluteal implants, they are placed through a small vertical incision between the two sides of the buttocks, at the level of the lower spine, to completely hide the scar. These implants are similar to those used for breast augmentation but the silicone gel is somewhat firmer, considering the characteristics of this body area; firmer implants are required due to the higher compressive forces in this region.

Lipofilling

Lipofilling is a surgical technique in which fat from one part of the body is injected into another part. The fat is removed from other parts of the patient’s body (abdomen, thighs, hips) where it has accumulated. To achieve maximum results, hypercorrection may be used during the procedure, meaning more fat is injected than necessary. However, once the fat is injected, the results are permanent and without further complications. Lipofilling can improve the shape of the buttocks, making them larger and giving them a more natural appearance.

Postoperative Period

In both methods of performing gluteoplasty, the patient cannot fully sit for at least two weeks. This is perhaps the most important and difficult condition. From time to time, the operated area may experience sensitivity loss. Sensitivity typically returns within 2 or 3 weeks without any treatment.

After approximately 3 months, the implants fully settle, tissues completely heal, the buttocks achieve the desired shape, and the scars disappear.
