Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgical intervention in which excess, sagging skin and subcutaneous fat of the abdomen are removed, allowing the restoration of a normal, aesthetic appearance of the anterior abdominal wall.
Types of Abdominoplasty
Full Abdominoplasty
This option is recommended for patients who need the most correction. The incision is made along the bikini line. The length of the resulting scar depends on the amount of excess skin. The surgeon then models and tightens the skin and underlying muscles as needed.
Partial Abdominoplasty
Partial abdominoplasty is performed with smaller incisions and is often done for patients with less excess skin. During this procedure, the navel is usually not moved.
Circumferential Abdominoplasty
This operation involves the back of the body. When there is significant excess fat on both the back and the abdomen, either back liposuction or circumferential abdominoplasty may be required. The procedure allows for the removal of excess skin and fat from the thighs and back to improve the body shape from all sides.
Indications
- Separated rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis)
- Abdominal wall hernias
- Presence of post-pregnancy stretch marks and spots
- Skin-fat “apron”
- Presence of postoperative deformities
What is the difference between Abdominoplasty and Liposuction?
The difference lies in the technique; they complement each other rather than contradicting. Generally, abdominoplasty includes liposuction to remove fat and extensive removal of the skin of the lower abdomen, including surgical repositioning of the navel.
Surgery
Abdominoplasty is performed not only for aesthetic purposes but also, in some cases, for medical reasons, as significant changes in the shape of the abdomen can lead to numerous issues. In cases of pronounced skin folds, skin inflammation frequently occurs, which can cause infections. The excess weight of the tissues places a strain on the spine. This additional weight can cause congestion in the lower extremities, leading to the worsening of varicose vein disease in the lower extremities.
Postoperative Period
Abdominoplasty is a highly effective and noticeable surgery. The recovery process after the surgery is long and uncomfortable. However, after a few months, once the compression garment is removed and the swelling subsides completely, a natural, smooth, and taut abdomen will be visible. With a healthy lifestyle, the effect can be maintained for decades.
